What is Agricultural Economist?
An agricultural economist analyses economic dimensions of farming and food systems — studying crop prices, farm income, agricultural policy, rural credit markets, food supply chains and the economics of agricultural development. In India, where 58% of the population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture, agricultural economics research directly informs some of the most consequential policy decisions about MSP, fertiliser subsidies, irrigation investment and rural livelihoods. It combines economics rigour with deep rural India context.
Is this right for you?
For PCM or Arts students with strong economics and statistics aptitude who care about rural India and food security. Agricultural economics requires field research skills — travelling to villages, understanding farmer decision-making — alongside quantitative analysis.
