What is Solar Design Engineer?
A solar design engineer specifically designs photovoltaic (PV) solar energy systems — from rooftop installations for homes and commercial buildings to utility-scale solar farms. You calculate energy requirements, size solar arrays, design inverter systems, optimise panel layouts and model energy output. India added 15GW of solar capacity in 2024 alone, creating enormous demand for solar design engineers at every level from EPC contractors to panel manufacturers to energy consulting firms.
Is this right for you?
For PCM students with electrical engineering background who want to specialise in the fast-growing solar industry. Solar design is more focused and faster to enter than broader renewable energy engineering — you can become a productive solar designer within 1-2 years of graduation with the right training. It combines engineering analysis with practical site knowledge.
What you do daily
1
Design solar PV systems using PVsyst and AutoCAD
2
Calculate system sizing, panel layout and shadow analysis
3
Prepare detailed engineering drawings and BOQ
4
Evaluate equipment specifications and vendor selection
5
Review and validate designs from junior engineers
Career growth path

Market tied to government policy and subsidy cycles
Commoditisation driving down margins in EPC sector
India market context
India installed 73GW of solar by 2024 targeting 500GW by 2030 — creating massive engineering demand. Waaree Energies, Vikram Solar, Tata Power Solar and Adani Solar employ solar engineers. EPC firms like Sterling & Wilson and Jakson Group need large design teams. PM-KUSUM scheme is adding 30GW of agricultural solar.
